Phase 2: Provide an Effective Accommodation

Once the need for an accommodation is substantiated, the employer must then proceed to find and provide an effective accommodation.

Establish “Accommodation Team”
The challenge of finding a successful accommodation is significantly enhanced through a collaborative team approach, involving the employee, the employer, and rehabilitation professionals.

FIND THE RIGHT ACCOMMODATION
A “right” accommodation is one that enables an employee to perform the essential duties of his/her job by filling the gap between the employee’s functional abilities and the job requirements. Often, an accommodation is not limited to just one solution, but includes a combination of solutions working in concert. There is often more than one “right” solution and accommodations may need to change over time to meet the changing needs of both the employer and the employee.

Depending on the situation, efforts to find an appropriate workplace accommodation should include consideration of several alternatives:

Making facilities Accessible and Usable
Job Restructuring
Modified Work Schedules
Flexible Leave Policies
Reassignment to a Vacant Position
Acquisition or Modification of Equipment and Devices
Adjusting and Modifying Examinations, Training Materials and Policies
Providing Qualified Readers
Providing Qualified Interpreters
Providing Job Coaching
Providing Transportation
Providing Training
Providing a Personal Assistant
